Be Careful

Matthew 16:5-6 5 When they went across the lake, the disciples forgot to take bread. “Be careful,” Jesus said to them. 6 “Be on your guard against the yeast [leaven ferment]of the Pharisees and Sadducees.”

Let us look at the word yeast of the Pharisees and Sadducees. The word here could mean something like this, making a mountain out of a molehill or overestimate or maybe play up. What Jesus was saying to the disciples was be careful for they overemphasize the law when they teach. They make mountains out of small things. They might fudge the truth or falsify the actual truth as they speak or teach.

Jesus was warning them of what could happen as we read in John they were always trying to trip Jesus up. If we look at John 8:4-6  4 Teacher, they said, This woman has been caught in the very act of adultery.
5 Now Moses in the Law commanded us that such [women—offenders] shall be stoned to death. But what do You say [to do with her—what is Your sentence]?
6 This they said to try (test) Him, hoping they might find a charge on which to accuse Him. But Jesus stooped down and wrote on the ground with His finger.

If you know the Jewish law then if it was really so they would have brought both male and female in to be judged. Again they were trying to catch Jesus. In John 6:19 Did not Moses give you the Law? And yet not one of you keeps the Law. [If that is the truth] why do you seek to kill Me [for not keeping it]? We see where they try to use the Law against Him and He put them in their place.

So now in Chapter 8 they try again and catch Him in John 8:5 they throw the law at him again. So Jesus puts it back in their hands in John 8:7 he throws it right back at them. However, when they persisted with their question, He raised Himself up and said, Let him who is without sin among you be the first to throw a stone at her.

Again He got them and the woman was delivered from her sin in John 8:11 She answered, No one, Lord! And Jesus said, I do not condemn you either. Go on your way and from now on sin no more.

Jesus was talking about the yeast He was not talking about bread He was using the words as a parable, be careful of their teachings.

  1. If you live by grace, all will fall in place. no need for law, for if you live by law you will surely die…Jym , is it good to say pratice what you preach or not?

    1. Don I am not sure what you mean by practice what you preach or who you are saying it to… Are you saying to me that I should practice what I preach?

    2. OK just so the readers will know Don was not talking about me he was talking about the Pharisees and Sadducees and I think the scripture if you live by the law you will be judged by the law stands for them very well.
