Matthew 5:13-16 (NIV) 13 “You are the salt of the earth. But if the salt loses its saltiness, how can it be made salty again? It is no longer good for anything, except to be thrown out and trampled underfoot. 14 “You are the light of the world. A town built on a hill cannot be hidden. 15 Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead they put it on its stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house. 16 In the same way, let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven.

Back in the days of Jesus here on earth it came from salt marshes instead of water, and it contained a lot of impurities was in the it and made the taste. if it lost its taste it was thrown out on the byways where it was stomped into the earth by the people and animals that used this road. However  today it is made from salt water and this contains sodium chloride which stabilizes it.

The Greek word used here for salt is [halas] 217.[ halas hal’-as figuratively, prudence.] We are to be the seasoning of the earth, the we represent God and Jesus. We are the example of our Father. We should be careful or wise in handling matters, exercising good judgment or common sense for we are an example of what being a Christian is as said in Colossians 4:6 (NIV) Let your conversation be always full of grace, seasoned with salt, so that you may know how to answer everyone.
