The tongue, can we tame it?

The Tongue Can We Tame It

The tongue, can we tame it? I am using James 3:1-12 and I pray that all will take the time to read it and let it soak in for James spoke some powerful words here as well, however, the one which I wish to concentrate on is verse 2.

James 3:2 (NIV) We all stumble in many ways. Anyone who is never at fault in what they say is perfect, able to keep their whole body in check.

What I feel James is saying here is that no one can tame the tongue we are not perfect and will not be as long as we are here on earth. However, my dad had a saying that works here if only we can learn this he would say “Put your hummingbird brain in gear before opening your alligator mouth”. I do think that says it all and the funny part of this is my dad had no education nor did he go to church until his late 50’s.

Those few words are so powerful today and if we could only grasp and do them. How many times have we said things and then instantly think why did I say that, or in anger spurt out words that we can not ever take back. We find in Psalms 57:4 (NIV) I am in the midst of lions; I am forced to dwell among ravenous beasts— men whose teeth are spears and arrows, whose tongues are sharp swords.

With words, we can destroy a man or build him up. We can show him the right way or send him the wrong way. We can show love and kindness or hate and bitterness. I now pray that we think before we speak and speak in love and see the calming effect it has.

Memory Verse May 6, 2016

Hebrews 4:12 (NIV) For the word of God is alive and active. Sharper than any double-edged sword, it penetrates even to dividing soul and spirit, joints and marrow; it judges the thoughts and attitudes of the heart.

  1. THIS IS SO TRUE!!~ IN THE HEAT OF THE MOMENT WE CAN SAY SOME WORDS THAT WE WISH WE HAD NOT SAID, BUT ONCE YOU HAVE SAID IT,, YOU CANT TAKE IT BACK, THE DAMAGE IS DONE. JAMES 1:19 SAYS BE SLOW TO SPEAK AND QUICK TO LISTEN. PROVERBS 14:29 SAYS A WISE MAN CONTROLS HIS TEMPER.HE KNOWS THAT ANGER CAUSES MISTAKES. AND IN PROVERBS 13:3 SAYS SELF CONTROL MEANS CONTROLLING THE TONGUE. THIS IS REALLY GOOD JYM, THANKS!!
I WISH I COULD HAVE DONE THIS ONE.
