The Fundamental Question Jesus Asks Who Do You Say I Am?

The fundamental question “who do you say I am”? That could be asked and is basically asked of us. He was not asking for a college degree from a cemetery (that is what I call a Bible Seminary) a story for a different time, let us stay on the point here.

A Fundamental Question Jesus Asks Who Do You Say I Am?

Matthew 16:15-18 15 (NIVR) 15 “But what about you?” he asked. “Who do you say I am?”
16 Simon Peter answered, “You are the Messiah. You are the Son of the living God.”
17 Jesus replied, “Blessed are you, Simon, son of Jonah! No mere human showed this to you. My Father in heaven showed it to you. 18 Here is what I tell you. You are Peter. On this rock I will build my church. The gates of hell will not be strong enough to destroy it.

That is the fundamental question. That is the question. And against it, and in comparison with it, there are no other questions. “But who do you say that I am? Each one of us need to answer that question. Not what someone else says, but who do you say He is?

If we go back to verse 13 Jesus ask who people say He is? And they tell him in verse 14 Then he asks them. And Peter tells Him. Then in verse 18, He says upon this rock I shall build My Church and the gates of hell can not destroy it!  The perfect and correct answer to the fundamental question.

It was because Peter had just then, you might say ‘he put his flag up’ and answered the fundamental question by confessing that Jesus is “the Christ, the Son of the living God”. Peter, declared Jesus to be what he himself would later say that others where who confessed Jesus Christ as the Son of God. Let us now read in 1 Peter 2:4-5 (MEV) 4 Coming to Him as to a living stone who is rejected by men, but chosen by God and precious, 5 you also, as living stones, are being built up into a spiritual house as a holy priesthood to offer up spiritual sacrifices that are acceptable to God through Jesus Christ.

Do we all have an answer for this fundamental question? Is it time to start thinking about it for some day one might just be asked that question…
