Walking On The Water

Walking on the water who did it?  I am sure everyone says Jesus, and you are right however let’s go one step farther…  Didn’t Peter walk in the water?  And the answer from most would be yes but…  Now there is a word you can go back and read all that I have written and you will not find that word, unless I am quoting something some one said or wrote.  I do not use the word but, I will say however, except, could have, anything however not but.

Why not Jym some are saying.  Well to me it is a negative word. yes but… but what I would have been here on time but,  I would have come to church but, and the list goes on. Now back to what we were talking about let us look at some scripture.  There is a lot of scripture here all at once however I want the whole story first.

Matthew 14:22-33

22 Immediately Jesus made His disciples get into the boat and go before Him to the other side, while He sent the multitudes away. 23 And when He had sent the multitudes away, He went up on the mountain by Himself to pray. Now when evening came, He was alone there. 24 But the boat was now in the middle of the sea, tossed by the waves, for the wind was contrary.

25 Now in the fourth watch of the night Jesus went to them, walking on the sea. 26 And when the disciples saw Him walking on the sea, they were troubled, saying, “It is a ghost!” And they cried out for fear.

27 But immediately Jesus spoke to them, saying, “Be of good cheer! It is I; do not be afraid.”

28 And Peter answered Him and said, “Lord, if it is You, command me to come to You on the water.”

29 So He said, “Come.” And when Peter had come down out of the boat, he walked on the water to go to Jesus. 30 But when he saw that the wind was boisterous he was afraid; and beginning to sink he cried out, saying, “Lord, save me!”

31 And immediately Jesus stretched out His hand and caught him, and said to him, “O you of little faith, why did you doubt?” 32 And when they got into the boat, the wind ceased.

33 Then those who were in the boat came and[c] worshiped Him, saying, “Truly You are the Son of God.”

Where do we start… We can start withe they were all in the boat, the disciples.  The scripture says Jesus made the disciples get in the boat so they all were in the boat, I would say all 12 and then Jesus comes strolling out across the water, and the disciples thought it was a ghost.  So Jesus let’s them know it’s OK it is Him.  However Peter says “Lord, if it is You tell me to come to You.  And Jesus said “Come” and Peter stepped out of the boat and walked on the water to go to Jesus.  Now this is the part where I have heard a few sermons on, Peter started sinking and he said “Lord save me”.  Many messages on Peter sinking so I will leave that alone, well not really.  What did Peter mean by “Lord save me”.  Did he mean Lord I don’t want to die and go to hell so please save me so I can go to heaven or did he mean I am about to drown please get me out of here.  Well let us look at this word Save, it is the Greek word sozo a verb meaning

  1. to save a suffering one (from perishing), i.e. one suffering from disease, to make well, heal, restore to health

  2. to preserve one who is in danger of destruction, to save or rescue

Peter didn’t want to drown and Jesus got him to safety then He says “O you of little faith, why did you doubt?”  However through it all Jesus saw and knew Peters heart. not is earthly body nor his actions…

My point is, there were 11 other disciples in the boat not one of them attempted to step out of the boat.  And with this ministry, that God has given me I hope that we grow some like Peter in our group that will step out of the boat.  It is easy to be a in the boat Christian, however hard to be a step out of the boat Christian.  It takes some guts to face what might happen and a lot of trust that Jesus will stretch out His hand and save us.  Another way of putting it is easy to set in the Church and worship and praise God however to talk to that unsaved neighbor or friend you are going to have to trust God and step out of the boat…  And trust that God will reach out and save you if you start to sink.

I remember going to an apartment when I was first saved to visit someone who visited our Church and they were not at home, the guy I was with said “well we can leave this tract to let them know that we stopped by.”  “Then we can go home.”  I said “Well let’s knock on this door”, and before he could say anything I knocked on it.  This lady opened the door and I introduced us and told her where we were from and she invited us it.  We lead her to the Lord that day and later she tells us that Church after Church came next door to see the gentleman that lives there however none of them ever knocked on her door and that is all she wanted was some one to knock on her door [someone to step out of the boat] and tell her about Jesus and what he did.  So think about it… Are you in the boat and are you ready to step out of the boat?
